What are flares on a van?

Flares are Thermoformed ABS Plastic panels that will extend the width of your van, increasing usable space and opening up new design options. They are available with or without windows, either fixed or sliding. There are many names for these panel, some of them are: Camper Van body Flare, Bed Flares, Sprinter Flares, Crafter Flares, Camper Flare, Bump Outs, Side Flares, just to name a few.

Can you sleep sideways in a Mercedes Benz Sprinter van?

Yes, you can sleep sideways in a Sprinter van. A tall person won’t be able to stretch out, as most Sprinter vans are about 1850mm. By Adding the bed flares, the usable width increases to 2030mm. Can I paint my Emprise Global ABS Plastic Campervan Body Panels?

Yes, Preparing ABS to be painted is easy, and you can use just about any solvent-based paint. Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, or ABS plastic, is used to create the Camper Van Body Flares. ABS plastic is nonporous and slick, and without proper surface prep, paint will peel and chip away from ABS relatively soon after application. Before you attempt to paint ABS plastic, you will need to condition the surface to accept the paint. Automotive “lacquer” based sandable primer is best.

Below are some simple Step to follow.

Step 1

Wash the ABS plastic Campervan Body Flare panel with soap and rags. Rinse away all soapy residue to prevent problems with adhesion. Allow the ABS to dry completely.

Step 2

Abrade the ABS to promote adhesion by lightly sanding it. Sand the plastic until it feels slightly scuffed to your fingertips. Important: do not over scuff as this will show through the finished paint.

Step 3

Wipe down the ABS plastic Campervan Body Flare panel with a tack cloth.

Step 4

Protect any parts of the ABS plastic Campervan Body Flare panel you want left unpainted by covering them with tape.

Step 5

Lay the ABS plastic Campervan Body Flare panel on top of a drop cloth.

Step 6

Apply primer to the ABS plastic Campervan Body Flare panel in brief, intermittent bursts. Do not apply in a long, steady, consistent stream as this may lead to runs.

Step 7

Allow the ABS to dry for three hours, and then apply two coats of acrylic spray paint to the plastic using the same application technique you used in step six. Allow two hours of dry time between each coat.

We strongly advise a professional panel and paint specialist to undertake this task.
